Error code 176109: Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number

Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product NumberWhen attempting to open or register Point of Sale, you see the following error:

QuickBooks POS Error code 176109: Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number.

Why this is happening?

Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number may be caused by one of the following:

  • The Point of Sale Entitlement folder contains damaged files.
  • An incorrect product code has been used to install Point of Sale.
  • You are not logged in to Windows as an administrator.

How to fix it

Note: The following solutions require that hidden folders are enabled.

Solution 1: Delete the contents of the entitlement client folder and try again

QuickBooks POS Version 2013, v12.0, v18.0– Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number

Windows 10 and 8

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8.
  2. Press the CTRL + A keys to select all the files in the folder and then press Delete.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8
  2. Press the CTRL + A keys to select all the files in the folder and then press Delete.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

Windows XP

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to the location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v8. To navigate, click the plus sign (+) next to each folder listed.
  2. Right click the first file in this folder and select Delete. Click Yes and repeat for each additional file in the v8 folder.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

QuickBooks POS Version 9 and 10 – Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number

Windows 10 and 8

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v6.0.
  2. Press the CTRL + A keys to select all the files in the folder and then press Delete.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v6.0. To navigate, click the arrow symbol next to each folder listed.
  2. Press the CTRL + A keys to select all the files in the folder and then press Delete.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

Windows XP

  1. Navigate in the file explorer window to the location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Entitlement Client\v6.0. To navigate, click the plus sign (+) next to each folder listed.
  2. Right click the first file in this folder and select Delete. Click Yes and repeat for each additional file in the v6.0 folder.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again. If the error persists, try solution 2.

QuickBooks POS Version 8 and older – Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number

Option A: Run the 176125 tool

  1. Close Point of Sale if it is running.
  2. Ensure you are logged into Windows as an Administrator and download the 176125 repair tool:
    1. Click Save when prompted and save the file to your Windows desktop.
    2. Double-click POS176125.exe on your desktop and follow the wizard, selecting your version of Point of Sale on the initial screen.
    3. Open Point of Sale and register if prompted.
  3. If the error recurs, run a repair installation on Point of Sale, verifying the Product Number and License Number. (If the product and/or license numbers are incorrect, enter the correct numbers during this process.)
  4. Open Point of Sale and register if prompted.
  5. You should no longer see Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number.

Option B: Delete the contents of the entitlement client folder manually

  1. Navigate in the left window to the location (where X is the highest number version you see):
    • Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\Entitlement Client\X. To navigate, click the arrow symbol next to each folder listed.
    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\Entitlement Client\X.
  2. Right click the first file in this folder and select Delete. Click Yes and repeat for each additional file in the X.0 folder.
  3. Open Point of Sale again and complete the registration process again.
  4. You should no longer see Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number.

Solution 2: Rename the WSActivity file

  1. Go to:
    • Windows 10, 8, or 8.1: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX\Ini
    • Windows 7 and Vista: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX\Ini
    • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Intuit\QuickBooks POS XX\Ini
  2. Right-click WSActivity and select Rename.
  3. Enter OLDWSActivity and click anywhere to save.
  4. Close the window then follow Solution 1 again.
  5. Open Point of Sale again.
  6. You should no longer see Invalid Product Code or Invalid Product Number.
